THE MATERIAL FOOTPRINT

The supply of raw materials for the territories is directly (raw materials) or indirectly (finished or semi-finished products) based on massive import flows. Therefore, their economy is becoming more and more dependent on external resources (fossil energies, biomass, minerals, etc.)

Given the risk of deterioration in the availability of certain resources, the territories urgently need to take the measure of the content of their raw materials’ imports (from the rest of France or the rest of the world) in order to:

  • assess the level of external reliance
  • identify import flows generating vulnerabilities for local economy

The notion of “material footprint” refers to all natural resources (fossil energies, metallic or non-metallic minerals, biomass, etc.) consumed throughout the production chain of goods and services imported by the territory.
